Jules Dupre began by painting Alpine scenes on clock cases and working in a porcelain factory and ended his career as one of the most
famous of the Barbizon artists.  His Paintings are now among the most sought after and valuable of the core group who founded the movement.

Dupre was born in Nantes in 1811 or 1812 (there is some discussion about the year).  At 19 he exhibited a picture in the Salon.  From this time
he excelled, being given medals and honors… In 1849, when he was 36 he received the coveted decoration of the Legion of Honor, a
distinction long withheld even from Rousseau.  When it finally was awarded to Dupre it caused a breach in their friendship.

His works are in museums throughout the world and have been collected by many Americans throughout the 19th and 20th century.  The
English (as well) have a penchant for the work of the Dupre brothers…. Jules is the older and has been the most collected of the two.  The
distinguishing character of his work is the fine detail even in the smallest works and the lovely porcelain-like finish of the canvas.   Some critics
have remarked about the porcelain-like finish and immaculate detail of the small canvases that harken back to his early training in the
porcelain factories.
