Barbizon painting is a fascinating period in the
history of art. Until this decade it was largely
underestimated because it was lost in the rapid
transition from classical to modern painting. It is
rare to find an unexplored genre such as this,
especially one so rich in masterful works. The
current rediscovery of this period has restored
Barbizon to its place in history and has
contributed to a steady increase in the value of
the paintings.
Barbizon artists were pivotal to the decline of
the Academy's domination over artists by
consistently defying its rules and preconceived
ideas about art. They were the first to define
landscape painting as a valid art form,
replacing the old elitist subjects such as
portraits of the aristocracy, and religious and
historical scenes. Barbizon landscapes
glorified Nature and the common man. The
artists’ rebellion reflected the democratic social
changes brought about by the French
Revolution. Unfortunately, these pioneers fell
through the cracks of history when the more
dramatic Impressionists surged forward to
capture public attention. Although they were
obscured in the flood of new ideas, many
prominent American families (especially
Bostonians) quietly collected the Barbizon
artists, preserving their legacy through
endowments to museums.
With great pleasure, I present this exceptional
group of Barbizon paintings recently acquired
from France. Since 1990, my aim has been to
provide my collectors with the best examples
of these works that are mostly inaccessible in
the United States. My own independent
research into the authenticity and quality of
these works is augmented by the help of the
foremost experts and scholars in the field of
19th Century French landscape painting.
